Wine and Pomegranate Smoothie Recipe

Due to the fact that I grew up in a farming environment in the outskirts of Cape Town and Stellenbosch (South Africa), wine has always been a part of life. Similarly, I remember the pomegranate tree close to our house very well.

Background

Especially for a kid, pomegranate is not the easiest fruit to eat. Yet, it was always fascinating during fruiting season, to at least give it a shot or two. Never convinced if you should swallow the seeds whole, or simply chew and spit the white core out.

As you get older, you become more health-aware. You appreciate the finer things in life more, such as nutrient-rich fruits, exotic recipe blends, trying health smoothies, and so forth. While as a teenager, you’re more or less satisfied with an occasional orange, apple, banana, granadilla and maybe grapes. As you’ll see below, eating pomegranates need not be complicated. You really can simply chuck the seeds into a blender.

In this recipe, we chose Shiraz red wine since it’s a typical wine from the Boland wine region outside of the Cape. It fruity red palate perfectly complementing the dark red juice of the Pomegranate’s pips.

Although you could grab a fresh pomegranate (or two) at your local fruit and veg grocer, in this case, we use frozen pomegranate seeds.
